About the role:

Ink is looking for an ambitious Art Director to help launch a new title for a leading European airline with a readership of up to 7 million people. The Art Director will take ownership of the magazine from inception through to print. You'll have an eye for detail and a passion for creating ground-breaking, award-winning work. You're a conceptual thinker and great with clients.

You will be central in implementing the creative vision for the project, and to help maintain/develop it across all platforms. You will also be responsible for working on design and visuals across all products— print, digital, marketing materials and commercial projects.

The Role:

  • Design all aspects of the magazine content including covers, pages and supplementary assets, ensuring everything is on-brand and eye-catching.
  • Coordinate with editors and picture teams to develop ideas and commission content.
  • Be a creative ideas machine, leading from the front in generating cool, modern, on-brand ideas the audience will love.
  • Design layouts across the magazine, from 8-page long-read investigations with original art, to templated regular pages.
  • Work closely with the production and subs to ensure a seamless process that works to deadline, runs efficiently and minimises hiccups – from early-stage planning, right through to finalising pages and helping send the magazine to press.
  • Build and maintain a brand style guide that can be used across the brand and wider business, directing in fonts, colour palettes, visual identity, etc.
  • Build a bursting contacts book of artists, illustrators, photographers and freelancers, building relationships along the way.
  • Liaise and collaborate with other internal departments ranging from sales and senior leadership including Creative Director.
  • Oversee and be the main point of contact for all visuals across the entire magazine brand, across all platforms

We're excited if you have:

  • Experience designing at a senior level.
  • Generating visual ideas and see them through from scratch to publication.
  • Ability to forge excellent working relationships with an editorial team
  • Unflappable under pressure, ability to juggle multiple projects, collaborative approach to working with multiple editorial teams.
  • Prioritising most pressing work despite competing pressures
  • Significant experience in graphic design & art direction, preferably in a creative agency or publishing house
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and other relevant design software.
  • An obsession with visual communication and how it can be used to tell stories, transmit emotion, influence behaviour and spark action.
  • Strong passion and understanding of typography, colour theory, composition, and visual hierarchy. UX and UI principles would be advantageous but not essential.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to articulate creative ideas and provide constructive feedback.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Passion for contemporary design and a keen interest in aesthetic and design trends and innovations.
  • Previous experience monthly, weekly title and mentoring junior team members is a plus.
