Introduction

Overview

Every project you've worked on has a story, and a well-crafted case study brings that story to life💥. It's not just about showing the end result but about illustrating your journey, your problem-solving skills, and your creative process. We'll walk you through creating case studies that do more than showcase your work 👉 they highlight your expertise and thought process, making your portfolio irresistible to potential clients or employers.

Lesson 01

Building the right Framework

A well-constructed case study is structured to engage the reader and provide a deep dive into your project. Think of it as how you would tell a story:

❶ Project Title: 💬 Begin with a descriptive title that clearly indicates the scope of the project, such as "Nike Air Max E-commerce Website Redesign." This not only clarifies the project's focus but also highlights your expertise in that area.

Introduction & Objective: 👉 Start your case study with a brief introduction that sets the scene. Outline the product or service, the initial brief from the client, and the challenges you aimed to solve. This section should provide context and prepare the reader for a deeper dive into your creative process.

Approach, Insights, Results: ⚡️Detail your creative journey in structured paragraphs, discussing the strategies you used, insights gained, and the impact of your work. Use before-and-after visuals or relevant metrics to illustrate the results. If outcomes can't be shared, emphasize the strategic value of your contributions.

Descriptive Images & Captions: 🌟🌟🌟 Incorporate high-quality visuals or even videos that conveys the story and concept. Don't be afraid to show your process if interesting. Captions can be helpful too.

Acknowledgements & Your Contribution: ✏️ Clearly articulate your role in the project, whether as a lead designer, collaborator, or specialist in a particular area. If it was a collaborative effort, acknowledge the team, similar to a film credit roll, to demonstrate professionalism and clarify your specific contributions.

Take a look at our presentation below 👀 that shows how you can translate the structure in your website and check the Studio TWIST case study example on page 2.

Lesson 02

Writing & Visualizing Your Case Study

The effectiveness of a case study all comes down to how good it is, how well it’s written and presented. Use clear, professional language and ensure your visuals are high-quality and relevant.

🌟Is it good enough?: You probably don't want to hear this but chances are some projects in your folio are not good enough.🚨 You constantly need to evaluate if it is still meeting your bar as of today. Go and ask Mentors, other more senior Designers to give you the harsh reality what is great and what sucks. Ask yourself, is it the best possible presentation? 👉 Is it still relevant with the direction I want to establish myself? Is there a part of the case study I should rework or leave out? Only through this you will end up with a great portfolio

✏️ Writing Tips: Use active voice and keep paragraphs short. Focus on clarity and precision to keep the reader engaged. We recommend to first research case studies of your favorite designers and studios and study the structure and what you like about each. You can use ChatGPT or other AI tools to helo you with the writing. However, make sure to adjust if necessary and make it personal and less obvious it was written by AI.

🎨 Visual Tips: ALWAYS Use high-quality images! Either as part of a professional photoshoot or by investing in high Quality mockups!💰 We have listed our favorite resources of mock up pages that can instantly elevate your case studies! Just make sure mockups look realistic otherwise it looks cheap. Study other professionals how they present their work to get inspired. 👉 You can mix images with videos, a mixture of different formats (fullscreen landscape + double portrait images for example). Old vs New comparisons can convey the strength of your idea, same goes for diagrams or flowcharts 📈 that explain the process visually.
