Introduction

Overview

Think of your cover letter as a personal introduction to your future employer. It's your chance to show not just WHAT you can do, but WHO you are. 💪 In this module, we'll dive into creating cover letters that grab attention, showcase your personality, and demonstrate your fit for the role. 🚀

👀 Remember, your cover letter is your opportunity to shine; it should be a reflection of your excitement for the opportunity.

Lesson 01

Structuring Your Cover Letter for Maximum Impact

Before you begin, always tailor your application to the job’s requirements. Some jobs explicitly ask for cover letters, and some platforms like Dribble only focus on your portfolio when applying. 💡 But even here if the platform allows, include a brief introduction whenever possible.

Now let's talk about the structure: ⚠️ It sets the tone for how recruiters perceive you.  Think of it as a professional yet personal pitch to your potential employer. Begin with a strong introduction that grabs attention - think of it as the HOOK ✨, followed by a body that outlines your relevant skills and experiences. Here you can also mention and link to your portfolio or a specific project. 👁️ Explain briefly what the recruiter will find there, highlighting projects that demonstrate key skills for the job.

Close it with a compelling a statement that reiterates your interest in the role and invites further discussion.

Lesson 02

Lesson 2: Tailoring Your Message to the Job

Customizing your cover letter for each job application is crucial. Again, it is CRUCIAL! 🚨 You will lower your chances of landing the job if you make it sound too generic. Start by thoroughly reading the job description to understand what the employer values most. ( Yes, it is a good idea to note down keywords and pick up on these in your Cover letter).

👉 Highlight your experiences that directly relate to the job’s needs. Use specific examples to demonstrate how you’ve successfully handled similar responsibilities. This is your opportunity to tell what they can't see in your portfolio or CV. This tailored approach shows that you are 100% serious about the job!

Lesson 03

Lesson 3: Adding a Personal Touch to Your Application

Address your cover letter to a specific person — avoid "To Whom It May Concern." 🔍 A quick LinkedIn search can usually reveal the name of the hiring manager. Share a brief personal story that connects your values or background to the company’s mission. This personal touch can make your application memorable and shows you've done your homework, aligning your personal ethos with the company's culture.

Then there is tone of voice 🗯️ - depending on the size of the company or their segment your writing can either be very professional or even more playful, warm and personal (ie.with smaller design studios). 👉 We have outlined a few examples in our presentation that you can draw inspiration from.
